Corporate Governance Asia’s CEOs Interview: Fosun Develops “Business for Good” to Create Sustainable Impact
The most authoritative corporate governance magazine in the Asia Pacific region,Corporate Governance Asia, has recently presented the 15th Asian Excellence Award. Chen Qiyu and Xu Xiaoliang, Executive Directors and Co-CEOs of Fosun International, were awarded Asia’s Best CEO by the magazine.
According to Corporate Governance Asia,in 2024, in the face ofthe complex and volatile external environment, Fosun maintained its strategic focus on core businesses, achieved steady development,enhanced the operational capabilities of its key industries, and demonstrated strong operational resilience. Amid the complex external business environment, Mr. Chen Qiyu and Mr. Xu Xiaoliang, as the CEOs of a global large-scale private enterprise, have not only led the Group to grow its business operations, but also strengthened the management of sustainable development, proactively fulfilled corporate social responsibility, improved the Group’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance, and leveraged the resources and advantages of Fosun’s global industrial ecosystem to continuously create a better world.

Fosun Develops “Business for Good” to Create Sustainable Impact
The escalating climate crisis reached a new peak in 2024, as the World Meteorological Organization confirmed it as the warmest year on record. The intensification of economic and social risks, compounded by increasingly frequent extreme weather events, underscores the necessity of a low-carbon transition—not as a choice, but as an imperative for corporate sustainability. Amid this urgent global shift,Fosun, a leading global innovation-driven consumer group, continues to strengthen its commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) management, driving impactful change toward a more sustainable future.
Actively responding to climate change and promoting low-carbon transformation
Fosun has moved beyond passive adaptation to actively driving climate action through innovation. Under the leadership of its Board of Directors and Carbon Neutrality Committee, the Group has integrated carbon neutrality into management performance appraisal, established a carbon emission management system, and provided greenhouse gas inventory training. Advancing its low-carbon transformation, Fosun is harnessing innovative technologies to create a more sustainable industrial chain and eco-friendly consumer products.
With climate change being one of the most severe long-term risks, Fosun recognizes the importance of global cooperation to tackle this challenge. Fosun remains committed to advancing China’s “dual carbon” goals by promoting carbon neutrality and energy conservation and emission reduction. In 2021, Fosun made a commitment to society – “strive to peak carbon emissions by 2028 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050”. Fosun has formulated strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation to align with the 1.5°C temperature control target set in the Paris Agreement.

In April 2025, the Group released its third Climate Information Disclosures Report, enhancing the transparency of its climate actions and demonstrating its ongoing commitment in this area. Additionally, the Group successfully completed a sustainability-linked syndicated loan amounting to USD888 million in 2024, ranking among the top in similar loans for Chinese private enterprises. This achievement underscores its dedication to advancing green finance and sustainable development.

Fosun actively promotes climate action among its member companies. The Bund Finance Center (BFC), the Group’s base in Shanghai and a landmark in Shanghai, maintained its LEED Platinum certification, a global green building benchmark, and was included in Shanghai’s first batch of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality pilot demonstration projects in 2024.

Meanwhile, Fidelidade participated in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for the second consecutive year, launching the Impact Center for Climate Change (ICCC) to advance climate risk research and strengthen the insurance sector’s response to climate change.
Driving sustainable development through innovation
Chen Qiyu, Executive Director and Co-CEO of Fosun International, said, “Innovation is a core driving force for Fosun’s sustainable development. Chen Qiyu emphasized that healthcare innovation remains a key focus for Fosun, stating that “Henlius’ R&D portfolio will expand into bispecific and trispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates(ADCs), and nuclear medicine following PD-1. Our goal is to build a comprehensive antibody-based platform and develop more innovative drugs to enhance global access to lifesaving treatments.”

Fosun continues to drive healthcare advancements, strengthening innovation and accessibility in medical treatments. Henlius’ HANSIZHUANG (serplulimab injection) became the first and only PD-1 innovative drug approved for the first-line treatment of extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) in the European Union. Meanwhile, Fosun Pharma’s independently developed artesunate for injection had saved over 80 million severe malaria patients worldwide, with more than 400 million doses supplied globally as of the end of 2024.

In China, Fosun Kairos’ first CAR-T cell therapy product, Yi Kai Da (ejilunsai injection) had benefited over 800 lymphoma patients as of the end of 2024, while Intuitive Fosun’s Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy received approval in 2024. Fosun remains committed to global cooperation, ensuring medical technologies are accessible and affordable for more patients.
Developing “Business for Good”and actively driving global sustainable development
Leveraging its global business presence, Fosun operates responsibly across more than 35 countries and regions, actively contributing to public welfare and generating sustainable value worldwide.

Through this framework, Fosun reinforces its commitment to ethical business practices and sustainable growth.

Fosun has long been dedicated to philanthropy projects in areas such as rural revitalization, healthcare, educational equity, community construction, culture and art, significantly expanding its impact across global communities and striving to build a more responsible, inclusive and sustainable future.

The Rural Doctors Program has covered 78 counties in 16 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China, benefiting 3 million rural families
Among these initiatives, the Rural Doctors Program has supported 25,000 rural doctors and benefited 3 million rural families since its launch in 2017. Moreover, the “Rural Doctors Program Empowering Rural Medical Services” was included in the “20 Cases of Private Sector’s Sustainable Development in China for 20 Years” Report of the UN Global Compact.

Protechting 7.0 kicked off with the top four finalists announced in Lisbon in April 2025. In May, these four teams visited Shanghai, Macau, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong for exchanges and roadshows
Regarding youth entrepreneurship and development, Fosun Foundation, in partnership with Fidelidade and Luz Saúde, launched the Protechting Open Innovation Program in 2016. Since 2018, it has incubated 40 pilot projects and led to 5 commercial collaborations. Over seven years, Protechting has grown from Portugal to Europe, China, and beyond, becoming a global platform connecting young innovators across cultures.
Fosun’s efforts in the cultural ESG field have also made a significant global impact. In2024, the Yuyuan Lantern Festival(or the“Festival”)celebrated its30th anniversary, lighting up in honor of UNESCO’s recognition of China’s Spring Festival as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The Festival featured a national-level lantern show, showcasing the richness of China’s intangible cultural heritage.
Xu Xiaoliang emphasized Fosun’s commitment to cultural innovation, stating, “Fosun has leveraged technology to empower traditional culture, transforming the Yuyuan Lantern Festival into a cultural IP of Shanghai. In the Year of the Snake edition, themed ‘Adventure of Mountains and Seas: The Jungle Chapter’, the Festival leveraged VR technology to create China’s first immersive light and shadow exhibition, showcasing the diverse landscapes depicted in ‘The Classic of Mountains and Seas’.This pioneering experience offers visitors a unique immersion into oriental lifestyle aesthetics and China’s intangible cultural heritage.”

2025 Thailand Yuyuan Lantern Festival was officially illuminated at ICONSIAM in Bangkok on 28 June.
All installations have been made with LED lights,not only enhance the artistic and aesthetic aspects of the lanterns but also effectively save energy
Expanding its global presence, the Festival debuted in Paris in 2023, followed by an installation in Hanoi in January 2025, commemorating 75 years of China-Vietnam diplomatic ties. On 28 June 2025, the 2025 Thailand Yuyuan Lantern Festival was officially illuminated at ICONSIAM, a renowned commercial landmark in Bangkok. The 50-day festival, running until 15 August, also marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Thailand, continuing to promote oriental culture on a global stage.
Embracing the best ESG practices and achieving outstanding ESG ratings
In recent years, global investors and stakeholders have attached increasing importance to the ESG performance of enterprises. Fosun has achieved remarkable progress in ESG, maintaining an MSCI ESG rating of AA and HSI ESG rating of AA-.It ranked in the top 5% among global peers in the latest S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), was included in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook 2025, and was selected as the top 1% in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook2025(China Edition).

Fosun has established a top-down and long-term mechanism for ESG improvement and has included ESG management performance as an evaluation factor in the Executive Directors’ performance assessment, and the ESG management performance appraisal mechanism is also extended to the CEOs of the Group and the personnel in charge of each business group. Fosun has set up an ESG Board Committee under the Board to assist the Board in guiding and overseeing the Group’s ESG development and implementation. At the management and decision-making level, Fosun has established an ESG Executive Committee under the management to provide decision support for the implementation of ESG strategies. At the implementation level, the Group has also set up an ESG Management Committee and an ESG Working Group to implement ESG strategies and related actions and ensure the establishment of appropriate and effective ESG risk management and internal control system.
