Coordinated by Vitor Gil, the new centre invests in the prevention, assessment and remediation of the risk of cardiovascular disease.

June 24, 2022, Lisbon - Hospital da Luz Torres de Lisboa inaugurated this week the Cardiovascular and Thrombosis Risk Center, under the coordination of Vitor Gil, a cardiologist with large experience in the area, who now joins the Luz Saúde group.

Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in the world, and Portugal is no exception, being crucial to prevent and diagnose it earlier on. The main purpose of this new centre is to plan and implement, in a multidisciplinary and integrated manner, programs of assessment and remediation of the cardiovascular risk.

“This centre arises in the context of a strong bet, from day one, on preventive medicine and also in the cardiovascular area”, stated Isabel Vaz, Luz Saúde CEO, in a ceremony marking the inauguration of the centre, on June 22. “We are pleased to count with professionals of the best school in the country in the cardiovascular area, which is also today ‘Luz Saúde school’. And we are very proud to rely now on professor Vitor Gil”, she highlighted.

As further explained by the Luz Saúde CEO, “Hospital da Luz Torres de Lisboa is a pole of Hospital da Luz Lisboa, the largest private hospital in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe, which is presently also a university hospital, involving until now around 300 million euros of investment, and the largest in the health private sector in Portugal”.

For Vitor Gil, “this centre is a big challenge”. “I’m very pleased to integrate the Luz Saúde group and the Hospital da Luz network”, he added, subsequently explaining the foundations of the project and how it will operate:
  • “The risk factors explain two thirds of cardiovascular diseases and subsequent mortality, about a third not being accounted for by such factors.”
  • “Our goal is to be exhaustive in determining that risk, on one hand, and to go further, with additional risk markers, in the other hand, to try to fill that ‘void’ and identify the atherosclerotic disease in a subclinical phase.”
  • “We aim to serve the patients the best way possible – whether when they have the disease, or when they no longer have it (or when they have it, but are unaware of it).”

“We make every effort, on a daily basis, to provide healthcare of excellence, and we hope that this project will mean an added value for all those who resort to us”, declared, on its turn, João Pacheco Pereira, the clinical director of HL Torres de Lisboa and also a member of the new centre team.

The Cardiovascular and Thrombosis Risk Center at Hospital da Luz Torres de Lisboa arises in the context of a global and integrated investment of Luz Saúde in Preventive Medicine. In this centre, we will prevent the cardiovascular disease, ensuring a personalized follow-up, identifying the genetic and non-genetic risk factors, determining specific programs for the adoption of healthy behaviours (at the level of nutrition, physical exercise, etc.), and including a highly differentiated treatment.
